Every Eyelash Extensions Glue manufactured on the market contains Cyanoacrylic (CA) which is a main active ingredient of the adhesive. When CA is used to bond lashes or comes in contact with moisture (air), formaldehyde is produced as a byproduct. Formaldehyde is a colourless gas and is the gas that gives that strong pungent “super glue” smell.
Now, we understand that Formaldehyde in CA can cause irritation to a client’s eyes, skin and body. Some clients who are exposed to CA for a few hours may develop an allergic reaction, what about a lash technician who is constantly having to work with CA all day long and breath in unfiltered formaldehyde fumes? Because you are dealing with fumes that may affect your long term health, it should be worth considering about protecting yourself from it.
How do we protect ourselves from the long-term damage that formaldehyde may cause?
Unfortunately, a single layered Carbon Surgical Mask will not sufficiently protect a technician from the harmful fumes. The best filter most suitable for a lash technician is a filter with a P100 rating, which is the highest rating for personal respiratory protection, with carbon layered mask and VOC filter (Volatile Organic Compound).
